New volunteers needed

Yay! We got 40 new people interested in helping out with the blog, which means that the volunteers only need to post 1x per month. It will also mean that the posts might be a bit more variable from day to day, or that there might be an error here and there. Please be kind to all the new people as they are learning to post. This is all volunteer work and I am so grateful for their help.

Do you love #MicrobiomeDigest.com and/or #SciCom ? MicrobiomeDigest.com needs 10 to 20 more volunteers for the daily updates! Without new volunteers we will have to shut it down. The more volunteers we have, the fewer times per month each volunteer will need to post. With 20 volunteers total, each person will do a post about 2x per month. It takes 2-3 h to do a post, and you can pick the days you want to post using a sign-up calendar, so it is very flexible. 

If you sign up, you will also have the opportunity to use this platform to write your own posts. Anything goes, as long as it is related to microbiology or science. All volunteers have authorship rights, so you can write and upload your own posts as often as you like.

Volunteers need to have some background knowledge of microbiology/microbiome, and be able to screen lists of PubMed or publisher’s alerts for relevant scientific papers.

If you are interested, shoot me an email at eliesbik on the gmail platform (you got this!). In that email, include a short paragraph about yourself. No CV/Resumes are needed, just the willingness to contribute about once or twice a month. Ability to follow these instructions are part of the selection process 🙂

    • It would be an 1 or 2x per month volunteer job (1 volunteer signs up every day), in which you will go over the forwarded email alerts from NCBI’s Pubmed and a bunch of journals with the latests microbiome papers. They need to be triaged and sorted into particular topics. You will get instructions and access to the WordPress site, as well as a signup calendar. Everything goes through a Google Group account.   4. Hello,

    I have attached my C.V. for consideration to assist with the Microbiome Digest. I am a retired Ophthalmologist with a background in Laboratory Medicine and worked in a hospital Microbiology laboratory before going on to pursue my Master’s Degree in Microbiology which I received in 1981. I went on to medical school training from there and completed my Ophthalmology residency in 1981. Since my retirement from my practice I have been reading quite a lot about the microbiome and related research in pathogenesis in many areas of medicine and with an obvious interest in Ophthalmology especially in chronic diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and Sjogren’s Syndrome. I have also read several books related to the microbiome by Ed Yong (I Contain Multitudes), Eugenia Bone (Microbiota) and Emeran Meyer, MD (The Mind-Gut Connection) among others which have piqued my interest further. I came across your Microbiome Digest while searching for more reading materials online and have been appreciative of all the posts to my e-mail. While my keyboarding and computer skills are limited I would be happy to assist you with continuing the Microbiome Digest which is a valuable online service to the Microbiology community.

    I am a Scientist from India, working in the field of Wildlife Genomics. I have completed my PhD in Biotechnology. Also, have experience in the field of Transcriptomics and Metagenomics. I am interested in being a volunteer. Please, let me know for further process.

    • I am commenting only because I want to see more people sign up to participate in helping this site continue. I’m quite annoyed by the seemingly laziness and/or poor reading comprehension of some of the commenters. The instructions were clearly noted in the original post, yet multiple commenters seem to have missed that and are asking for the original poster for information she already gave. Please read the OP (again?) and take this feedback into consideration, and adjust your behavior in the future.

      • Hey Maximilian,
        Please be kind here. I got replies from more than 40 new people interested in volunteering for the site, and I am currently setting up their accounts, sign up sheets, and instructions. This is run completely by volunteers, so there is really no need to be grumpy if there is no post on a particular day. There is a lot of work done behind the scenes to get this site back up to a full team of volunteers. I especially would like you to be kind to people who offer to volunteer.
